Helen Carrick is a teacher, librarian and historian (retired) who founded the Reading for Reconciliation group, which engages with Indigenous texts and authors.

When she began the book group back in 2004, Helen’s dream was that the idea would be taken up more widely and there would be “reading for reconciliation groups springing up all over Australia.”

Come along to this RQI general meeting to hear about Helen’s passion for the truthful telling of Australian history and the diverse experiences that set her on this path.

WHEN: Saturday, 23rd June 2018, from 1:00 pm – 3:45 pm
WHERE: Mitchelton Library, 37 Heliopolis Parade, Mitchelton

Entry to this Reconciliation Queensland general meeting is free and all are welcome.

Please bring a plate of food and/or refreshments for contribution to our afternoon tea. This is a largely informal affair and no motions have been proposed for the meeting.

Donations are always gratefully received and help our volunteer-run organisation continue to run these events, which aim to promote reconciliation while giving our members another opportunity to engage with the Association’s management committee.

To reserve your place, please RSVP by email to events@rqi.org.au or call Rosalie on 0448 468 618.

Reading for Reconciliation

Reading for Reconciliation was a finalist in the 2012 Queensland Reconciliation Awards. The photo below shows Helen Carrick (centre) holding the certificate they received, along with other members of the group.

The group has no political or religious affiliations and we come from a variety of backgrounds and ages.

They seek to expand our knowledge and understanding of current issues impacting on Australia’s First Peoples by reading and discussing works in an informal, friendly setting.

They meet at the Brisbane City Council’s BRISBANE SQUARE LIBRARY 266 George Street (at the top end of the CBD) on Sunday mornings, from 10.30 – 12.30, at approximately six weekly intervals. The room/s set aside for Reading for Reconciliation will be clearly marked.

NEW ‘READERS’ ARE ALWAYS WELCOME.

Members take turns in ‘leading’ discussion of a particular title and each ‘leader’ is expected to provide some extra background or context, focus the discussion, etc. All titles chosen are available through the Brisbane City Council Library service.
