Talking Reconciliation is important. Walking the talk is even better! This year, John Danalis took the NRW 2021 theme “More than a Word: Reconciliation Takes Action” to a whole new level.

As instigator of the Star of Taroom project, John Danalis took personal responsibility for returning this sacred cultural artefact 500km across the backroads and backblocks of South East Queensland from Brisbane to Taroom.

While blood testing cattle on Bethany Station (a property between Wandoan and Taroom) on Iman Country in the early 1970s, John’s father Jim spotted a large sandstone rock with a beautiful star carved deep into its face. He resolved then and there to load it onto his ute and take it to Brisbane, where it took pride of place in Jim’s backyard.

There it remained, until John managed to convince his father to return the groove stone. But Jim had been diagnosed with cancer in 2019 and passed away six months later, before they could complete the task.

The Star of Taroom was left in the Brisbane backyard, 500km away from Country. After another year, John felt it was time to make the journey.

But before he could return the Star, John needed to do some reading. He learned about 30,000 years of Iman occupation on the Upper Dawson. About a darkness that swept over the land in the 1850s, and of the silence that followed.

He learned about the Federal Court’s 2016 recognition of the Iman’s pre-existing native title. And he began to understand the meaning of the words “always was, always will be”.

Compared to the bravery, resilience and determination of the Iman, driving the stone back to Country now seemed like a pretty soft gesture.

And so, in July 2021, John and a band of volunteers walked the stone 500km back to Country in a specially built hand cart.

‘To the Iman’s ancestors, the rock was a tool sharpener, a waypoint directing people towards food sources, and a boundary marker of traditional country.’ – The Stolen Star, by Jon Daly and David Iliffe, ABC 7.30
