Our annual Defying Boundaries street walk is on again! On the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum, you are invited to join us on a walk from Boundary Street, Spring Hill to Boundary Street, West End.
These streets formed the boundaries of exclusion from the settlement of Brisbane that were enforced on Indigenous peoples at twilight during the 19th century.

The Defying Boundaries 2017 Boundary to Boundary Street Reconciliation Walk is one of Brisbane’s principal National Reconciliation Week (NRW) events.
NRW highlights Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander achievements in the journey towards reconciliation.

Defying Boundaries 2017
For the this year’s reconciliation walk, we’ll be meeting at 8:00am at St James College on Boundary Street, Spring Hill, where all walkers will be required to complete registration for this event.
Please be advised that we now need to start the walk by 8.30am.
The police have advised us that another walk will be coming through after us (for an unrelated event) and for traffic control reasons they need us to bring forward our start time by 30 minutes.
This is a FREE event. To help us with estimating numbers, please RSVP to events@rqi.org.au.
Please wear comfortable walking shoes, catch public transport if necessary and carry an umbrella if the weather forecast is for either rain or showers.
Then we’ll be walking to Boundary Street, South Brisbane, concluding at Kurilpa Point Park (approx 5km) at around 10am.
We’ll meet up with the Kuril Dhagun section of the State Library of Queensland (SLQ) for 50 Years and Counting, a day of community activities to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum.
All participants will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the walk.

1967 Referendum – 50th Anniversary
The 1967 Referendum (27 May 1967) changed the Australian constitution, with a record breaking ‘yes’ vote to count Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the census for the first time.
On the 50th anniversary of the Referendum, join the SLQ from 10:00am for 50 Years and Counting. This event is an opportunity to reflect on historic and contemporary significance of the Referendum, enjoy inspired talks, and engage in lively conversation.
Dr Chelsea Bond will deliver the keynote address at this event.
Dr Bond is a Munanjali and South Sea Islander woman and Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit. She is also an affiliate member of UQ Poche Centre for Indigenous Health.
Plus, reflect on Queenslanders’ evolving freedoms throughout history through the SLQ’s onsite exhibitions Freedom Then, Freedom Now (Philip Bacon Heritage Gallery, level 4) and Don’t Just Count Us, Let Us Count! (Kuril Dhagun, level 1).
