RQI members invited to General Meeting

Dr Jackie Huggins AM to speak at RQI’s first General Meeting for 2017

You are invited to join with RQI at our first quarterly General Meeting to hear from our patron Dr Jackie Huggins AM about the Redfern Statement and other matters of importance.

Declared on June 9, 2016, with the backing of more than 50 organisations, the Redfern Statement was an urgent call for a more just approach to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs.

Dr Huggins was there at the declaration of the Redfern Statement and will explain why it matters to the cause of reconciliation.

The RQI executive will also provide a report to members on activities and financials, and invite questions from members.

Note: There is a playground nearby for children and the Gaythorne RSL is just over the road from the venue. Entry is free, but donations will be gratefully received.

RSVP: All members and those interested in becoming members are welcome. Please email events@rqi.org.au or call Rosalie on 0448 468 618.

More about the Redfern Statement

We stand here as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peak representative organisations with a deep concern:

that in 2016 First Peoples continue to experience unacceptable disadvantage;

that the challenges confronting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to be isolated to the margins of the national debate;

that Federal Government policies continue to be made for and to, rather than with, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people; and

that the transformative opportunities for Government action are yet to be grasped.

Stand with us to let this statement and call for Government action be heard and acted upon by our nation’s leaders.

“Social justice is what faces you in the morning. It is awakening in a house with adequate water supply, cooking facilities and sanitation. It is the ability to nourish your children and send them to school where their education not only equips them for employment but reinforces their knowledge and understanding of their cultural inheritance. It is the prospect of genuine employment and good health: a life of choices and opportunity, free from discrimination.”

– Mick Dodson, Annual Report of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, 1993.
